Stephen Mulqueen

Coast Geological Society is pleased to announce that our November 19, 2024 meeting is sponsored by Stephen P. Mulqueen, a longtime friend of CGS.

Stephen Mulqueen is a native of Southern California, beginning his life in Pasadena where he lived until his graduation from Cal Poly Pomona with a B.S. degree in geology. Steve’s interest in geology began at a young age when exploring the great outdoors while on camping trips with his family. His first formal background in geology began in 1973 while attending Pasadena City College. Steve went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology at Cal Poly Pomona in June 1978.

Steve’s career has spanned over 40 years in occupations related to the mining and petroleum industries. He has many fond memories of his time at American Borate Company, Geotech, studies on underground and surface mines, Death Valley, CA. 1978–1979. He continued his desert assignments with Kerr McGee Chemical Corporation, Geologist, responsible for the solution mine, Trona, CA. 1979–1982. Next Steve began a rewarding career at the Department of Conservation, Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal, (DOGG) Ventura, CA. 1982–2005 and at California State Lands Commission, Long Beach, CA. 2005–2009.

After retirement in 2009, Steve continued being active in public outreach efforts that include writing professional articles, conducting PowerPoint presentations and leading geologic/paleontology field trips. His recent field trip during spring 2024 involved leading a group of 20 members of the Southern California Paleontological Society on a fossil trip to remote areas of Utah for Cambrian trilobites, Triassic ammonites, Triassic petrified wood and sites containing Jurassic dinosaur tracks. In additions to regular field trips, Steve generously shares rocks, fossils, geologic literature, histories and stories on a regular basis to students and earth science enthusiasts. He is a friend and contributor of many history museums across the West, and has a special affection for Santa Barbara City College.

Steve was a long time active in the Coast Geological Society, Desert Rat’s Society, Paleontological
Society, Gem and Minerals, Petroleum History Society. Steve leads professional geologic/paleo tours.

My comments on Mud-Logging and oil & gas drilling in California.

The end of oil/gas drilling in California’s has already happened, descending since 2015; capitulation occurred in early 2020, from 25 to 3 rigs now. Today there are no rank wildcats, semi-exploratory, field development wells being drilled. Drilling permits are either not issued or not utilized. The “Munger OilOgram” scout report, first published in 1919; was last published on August 16, 2023, with only 4 rigs drilling. Unfortunately the owner of Munger passed away and no one has resumed the publication for obvious reasons. In California’s not-so-distant-past the rig count was consistently between 50-150 rigs. No drilling means oil production declines, we import more oil and pay more than the rest of the Nation.

So you may ask, is “Mud-Logging” needed in California. Yes, but not for oil and gas. For the last 4 years Petrolog has been primarily engaged by Southern California Gas Company, (is not an oil company). For example, at Honor Rancho, Valencia, California, SoCalGas have drilled deep gas storage replacement wells. Those wells target the “Wayside 13 sand”, a coarse sand–pebbly turbidite, encased in Modelo (Monterey Fm) siltstone-claystone. Petrolog has also logged complicated abandonments at Aliso Gas Storage Facility, near Porter Ranch. Elsewhere, drilling with mud-logging occurs in our geothermal fields, Salton Sea, Geysers in northern California and Cosos in Inyo County (not oil drilling). The newest potential drilling is CO2 gas sequestration wells. CO2 sequestration is interesting and may offset burning “fossil fuels”. There are several CO2 drilling projects in the works.

Oil is powerful! Did you know, that one gallon of gasoline is equivalent to about 31,000 calories of energy? One gallon of diesel is roughly 35,000 calories, WOW! That’s a lot of power at $75/barrel; one $4 gallon will transport you 30 miles in a 4000 pound vehicle, double WOW! Except for nuclear, oil is an unequaled on demand powerhouse. A gallon of whole milk is roughly 2400 calories.

A Last Note: A big sign of change, Chevron (Standard Oil of California) has closed its San Ramon Corporate headquarters and are moving to Houston, Texas. Chevron is the 2nd largest publicly traded oil company in the United States. Standard Oil has operated in California since 1875, when it drilled the first “commercial” oil discovery at Pico Field, in the eastern Ventura Basin.

Scott is a retired Principal Geologist, CA PG and CEG, at Gorian Associates, Inc. with a Geology Degree from Cal Lutheran University. Scott often credited participation in CGS with finding him a job and kickstarting his successful career.

Scott and Donnalee were active with CGS and PSAAPG throughout Scott’s professional career. He served on the CGS Board for three years and was the 2003-2004 President. Donnalee volunteered as the Society’s Historian and compiled much of the historical background information now on the CGS website.
